Tallulah Bog

Venture to Tallulah Bog
with brief stops at Snowbird Lodge
and Stewart Ridge Road, Graham County, NC
April 23, 2004

Walking along the old road bed at Tallulah Bog is always an interesting experience and today was no exception. A chorus of birds met us at the gate and we immediately set about identifying and finding all of the singers. A very obliging group of Palm Warblers met us along the trail followed by Yellow-rumped and the first of several newly-arrived Indigo Buntings. We had excellent views of Northern Parulas, Yellow-throated, Hooded and Kentucky Warblers all along the path, along with Yellow-throated, Red-eyed and White-eyed Vireos. A Yellow-breasted Chat played hide and seek with us and the male Golden-winged Warbler transformed himself into a "Brewster's" Warbler. In the seasonally flooded maple-holly woodland we watched a pair of Blue-gray Gnatcatchers near their nest and heard the beautiful song of the Wood Thrush. A visit to Tullulah Bog is always a pleasant and bird-rich experience.
