Foggy View

Venture to Stecoah Gap April 26, 2004

The initial weather was rainy and it continued to rain to some degree throughout the trip; however the chorus of bird songs was good and we managed to see a good selection of Warblers, many Rose-breasted Grosbeaks, several Scarlet Tanagers and 2 Baltimore Orioles. When we entered Stecoah Gap, we were welcomed by a singing Cerulean Warbler which we were able to view. Additionally we had decent looks at Black-throated Green, Black-throated Blue, Blackburnian, Ovenbird, Black & White, Redstart, and some of us had views of Golden-winged and Chestnut-sided Warblers. Views of Grosbeaks and Tanagers were spectacular. Additionally the wildflowers carpeted the ground. We left wet Stecoah Gap and proceeded to wet Tulula Bog. The Bog provided good views of Hooded, Palm Warbler, Blue-gray Gnatcatcher and a Swamp Sparrow. Kentucky Warbler was heard but not seen. We had been holding off lunch hoping that weather conditions would improve. Alas we gave in and had a dry picnic lunch on the protected front porch of a Church, thanks to the sharp eyes and innovativeness of Billy Fuller.
