Wake Robin

Venture to Franklin Greenway and Wallace Gap, NC

May 22, 2005 with Beth Brinson

Eastern KingbirdWe started our day at the Little Tennessee River Greenway in Franklin where we had excellent looks early on of Orchard Oriole, Willow Flycatcher, Eastern Kingbird, Yellow Warbler, Cedar Waxwing, and Blue-gray Gnatcatcher. We discovered an Eastern Kingbird nest and had great views of the Kingbirds flying in and out of the nest. Song Sparrows and Gray Catbirds seemed to be in every other shrub. Near the end of our Greenway walk we were able to get an adult Red-shouldered Hawk in the spotting scope and had long looks as it moved from perch to perch. After lunch we headed to Wallace Gap where we saw Chestnut-sided Warbler and American Redstart and heard Least Flycatcher and Golden-winged Warbler. We ended the day with a hike along the Wasilik Poplar Trail in the Standing Indian area. This short trail goes through a rich cove forest to what used to be the second largest Tulip Poplar in the United States. Wildflowers were abundant and we were able to pick up more woodland birds such as Blackburnian Warbler, Black-throated Blue Warbler and Brown Creeper.
