Southern Ecuador

March 14 - 24, 2008

 

We all arrived safely in Guayaquil by late Friday – some, John, Mimi, Peggy and Diane, came in with Simon, Juan and Ivan from Quito. The rest of us flew directly into Guayaquil – though, Roger, Nancy and Carol flew in on Thursday and had an extra day birding Cerro Blanco.

An early start on Saturday found us driving through Guayaquil, pass the dead center of town with its 1.5 million inhabitants, to Cerro Blanco. Just before Cerro Blanco we had our first good bird – a pair of yellow-billed Croaking Ground-Doves. Unfortunately, only Mark got looks at two Ochre-bellied Doves in the driveway – but things improved for all rapidly. Simon soon found a Gray-capped Cuckoo – a real cool bird! We also saw a Magnificent Frigatebird and two Red-lored Amazons. Walking away from a café at the trailhead we soon got looks at Greenish Elaenia, a pair of Slaty Becards, two Speckle-breasted Wrens, and after much work – a favorite for Simon – a Gray-and-gold Warbler. Moving back down toward the visitor center we had several Streaked Saltators, we heard a Rufous-headed Chacalaca, Roger found a Pacific Pygmy-Owl, while Mark located a Pale-browed Tinamou.

Just before noon we left Cerro Blanco and drove to Salinas – birding from the bus yielded Pearl Kite, Long-tailed Mockingbird, Snowy-throated Kingbird, Harris Hawk and Peruvian Meadowlark. At the saline ponds at Salinas – we were in luck – a lone Chilean Flamingo greeted us, while we also had a field day with terns and gulls. We had Gull-billed, Sandwich and Royal Terns, Kelp, Franklin’s, Gray-headed, Laughing and Gray Gulls, and Peruvian Pelican. But the waders out-shone all – we had the following: Stilt, Least, Spotted, Semipalmated and Western Sandpipers, 30+ Wilson’s Phalarope, Sanderling, Ruddy Turnstone, Short-billed Dowitcher, Snowy, Black-bellied and American Golden Plovers, Whimbrel and Willet. Amazing. We also saw several Blue-footed Boobies offshore and in Salinas had Red-masked Parakeets at a nest.

Returning to Guayaquil in the late afternoon, we stopped at a dirt road near the Peninsula Providence Sign and found a great site for Crimson Tanager-Finch, Baird’s Flycatcher, Chestnut-throated Seedeater, Short-tailed Woodstar. Driving toward some hills on this dirt road we stopped at a water-filled quarry and found Paraque and a single Scrub (Antony’s) Nightjar.

On Sunday, after a bright and early start; we drove out of Guayaquil among flooded fields toward Manglares NP on our way to Buenaventura. However, while crossing the main river south of Guayaquil we all had OK views of several Chestnut-collared Swallows. Just before the flooded meadows we located an Amazilia Hummingbird at a truck stop. The flooded meadows, themselves, yielded loads of Wattled Jacana’s, maybe as many as a 100 Snail Kites, a Limpkin, several Masked Water-Tyrants, several Black-bellied Whistling-ducks, loads of Savannah Hawks. At Manglares we found two Horned Screamers – real cool! This is a disjunct population of 100 or so birds. We also located a White-tailed Kite and had our first kingfisher – a Ringed. After a long drive, we reached Buenaventura, but just before the lodge, we found a Gray-backed Hawk and an un-cooperative Ecuadorian driver! Once at Buenaventura, we all decamped to the open-air lounge for tea, coffee and beer and set about identifying the hummers at their feeders. We got within minutes the following: the endemic Emerald-bellied Woodnymph, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Green Thorntail, Green-crowned Brilliant, Andean Emerald, Long-billed Starthroat, Western Long-tailed (Baron’s) Hermit, White-necked Jacobin and several Bananaquits. We also got decent, but quick looks at the endemic El Oro Parakeet and Pale-mandiled Aracari. We also saw a Chestnut-mandibiled Toucan and 4 species of swift – Gray-rumped, Chestnut-collared, White-tipped and White-collared. After refreshments we walked up to the Long-wattled Umbrellabird lek and got incredible looks at one spectacular male. We also heard a Greater Schonis and many Ash-throated Bush-tanagers.

On Monday  after an early morning bird that yielded a Bronze-headed Pygmy-Tyrant and White-throated Spadebill we left for Loja. But as we left Pinas we got get looks at a Fasciated Tiger-Heron and later nearer Loja we got Gray-headed Parakeets.  

Tuesday found us running pass an on-going landslide and on to Cajanuma, part of Podocarpus NP. We got great looks at a Black-capped Hemispingus, Bearded Guan, Purple-throated and Flame-throated (Little) Sunangel and Barred Fruiteater. Later in the day found driving down to Zamora and the eastern slope of the Andes. We got distance looks at Rufous-bellied Nighthawk and dim views of Andean Cock-of-the-Rock.

Rio Bombascaro, the next day, was great. We had crippling views of Paradise, Spotted, Bay-headed, Orange-eared and Golden-eared Tanagers. We saw our second Umbrellabird, an Amazonian, our first White-breasted Parakeet and several Sub-tropical Caciques. In the late afternoon we visited Copalinga and on their Vervin got the following hummers: Glittering-throated Emerals, Golden-tailed Sapphire, Spangled Coquette, Wire-crested Thorntail, Violet-headed Hummingbird, Blue-fronted Lancebill. While relaxing with a beer we also saw a Chestnut-vented Conebill.

Returning to Rio Bombascaro the next morning we got an Ash-browed Spinetail, Black-streaked Puffbird and Blue-crowned Motmot. We then returned to Loja and then set off for Tapichalaca. Along the way, at a high pass, we got Paramo Seedeater and in Vilcabamba we saw a Loja Hummingbird. Arriving late at Tapichalaca we got Ameyst-throated Sunangel and Chestnut-breasted Coronet among others. Early the next morning with worms in hand we set off with a guide to the Jocotoco Antpitta feeding station. We were not disappointed – we got great looks at 2 individuals and a Chestnut-naped Antpitta to boot. Returning along the Quebrada Honda trail we also got Citrene Warbler and Gray-hooded Bush-Tanager. After a good lunch we set off walking and driving down toward Vallolid in search of Mararon endemics. Our first good bird was a pair of Black-throated Tody-Tyrants. Just before the bridge before Vallolid we got a great flock – which included Rufous-tailed Tyrant and Yellow-cheeked Becard. While at the bridge we got a flat but no problem – we got great looks at Mararon Thrush, Black-faced Tanager and a male Silver-backed Tanager.

Driving to Cuenca the following morning we stopped at Quebrada Honda trail and got a Bluish Flower-piercer and Orange-banded Flycatcher. Stopping near Ona for lunch we got Hooded Mountain-Tanager and Rainbow Starfrontlet.

Finally, Cajas – the end of a great trip – did not disappoint. At the entrance to the park we had a Mountain Velvetbreast and three Red-crested Cotingas. On the lake there we had many Andean Coots and two Andean Ruddy Ducks. Venturing up to the pass and restaurant we tried unsuccessfully for the endemic Metaltail but got excellent views of a Tit-like Dacnis, decent views of an Ecuadorian Hillstar and Red-rumped Bush-Tyrant and Andean Tit-Spinetail among others. Returning to Guayaquil we were lucky and found a group of Tumbes Swifts, got a Masked Tityra and even a Barn Swallow. All told 399 birds were seen on the trip.
