Venture Description

We will start at Beaver Lake in the lower elevations and then climb slowly into the Blue Ridge. Birding and pace will be easy. A field guide and notebook for note taking will be useful.

There’s nothing that can beat a walk in the woods in the spring. The new leaves are a bright emerald green, the first spring flowers are carpeting the forest floor and the woods are full of the sound of birdsong. But who are the singers? Finding and naming the singers can take a lot of time and can also be a real challenge, so it helps more than just a little to have a working knowledge of the voices in the woods.  How do you go about doing that? There are many methods one can use, but the best thing to do is to immerse oneself in the outdoors and track down the singers. Learn a few at a time and maybe the names and voices will eventually merge.   What we plan to do today is to immerse ourselves in the learning and knowledge of bird vocalizations. We will do a little “class work”, but most of the day will be spent listening to the birds around us, learning their songs and becoming familiar with the common birds sounds birds in our area.

Birding by Ear –Eastern (Tapes or CD’s) - Walton
