Venture Description

An easy day in the field looking for and studying butterflies. We will move from habitat to habitat, looking at butterfly diversity from place to place. We will concentrate on field identification; although I will have a net with me should we need it. We will also be in sunny locales throughout the day, so please dress accordingly.

Butterfly watching has increased rapidly over the last few years as many people have started getting interested in butterflies, butterfly gardening and planting/establishing gardens for all types of wildlife. The Carolina Butterfly Society is based in Greensboro, NC and to quote their web site, "The Carolina Butterfly Society emphasizes identifying and watching butterflies in the field and garden rather than collecting them. Every season we organize several butterflying field trips to the various biogeographic regions of the Carolinas. We offer advice on butterfly gardening, encourage photography and record-keeping, provide fact sheets for outdoor educators, sponsor gardening workshops, and collect data for conservation use."

On this Venture - an introduction into the world of butterflies, we will study their life cycle from egg to adult, look at butterfly gardening and the wide range of species that are found in western North Carolina. Whether you no very little or even a bit about butterflies, join us for a day out enjoying the Lepidoptera of WNC.
