As well as walking around the many easy trails in this excellent migrant corridor, we shall examine the study the many aspects of bird migration.
Jackson Park in Hendersonville is one of the most remarkable "migrant traps" in the southeast. Nearly every migrating bird in the east has been recorded here, with as many as 23 warblers recorded in a single day! Seldom seen on migration in this area, both Connecticut and Mourning Warblers have been found in the park. More likely to be seen are Bay-breasted, Wilson's, Golden-winged, Blue-winged, Blackburnian, Nashville, Northern Parula, both Louisiana and Northern Waterthrush --the list goes on and on! Not only warblers are abundant in the fall. Philadelphia Vireos are seen regularly, along with Red-eyed, White-eyed, and Yellow-throated Vireos. Swainson's and Gray-cheeked Thrushes feed in the berries at the tops of the trees along the woodland walk. A few Black-billed Cuckoos have been spotted as they migrate through the park. Jackson Park has several trails, which are worth walking during migration. A paved nature trail winds through a brushy area and along a creek, areas where birds are readily seen. A few minutes on the "Warbler Trail" in the fall shows you how this trail got its name. Small groups of mixed flocks of warblers and vireos, as well as thrushes and other songbirds keep you alert, trying to sort through all the activity to spot a "lifer". Are you ready to tackle confusing fall warblers now? With leaders familiar with them to help you sort them out, join us for one of the most enjoyable birding experiences--Jackson Park during fall migration.
