On the first day we set sail from Argentina’s capital city of Buenos Aires en route to Chile’s most southern-most city, Punta Arenas. We will sail south looking for seabirds along the way, such as Black-browed Albatross, Greater Shearwater, White-chinned Petrel and Southern Giant-Petrel. In Punta Arenas we will go ashore to see Andean Condor, Lesser Rhea, Coscoroba Swan, Upland Goose, Red Shoveler, Magellanic Snipe, and Magellanic Oystercatcher. With Black-browed Albatross and Giant Petrels soaring past the ship, we sail to Ushuaia, where we will again go ashore to look for Magellanic Woodpecker, Austral Parakeet, Fire-eyed Diucon, Austral Pygmy-Owl, Austral Thrush and Austral Negrito. After leaving Ushuaia we cross the Drake Passage and head south towards the Antarctic Peninsula. At sea we will hope for Grey-headed, and Wandering Albatross, Cape and White-chinned Petrels and many more seabirds. For the next few days we will be cruising along the Antarctic Peninsula sailing past Elephant Island, Antarctic Sound, Deception Island, Gerlache Strait, Neumayer Channel, South Shetland Islands and Admiralty Bay. Our target birds will include Snowy Sheathbill, Gentoo, Chinstrap, Adelie and maybe (if we are very lucky) an Emperor Penguin. At times several species of Albatross are following the ship as well as Southern Fulmar, Cape Petrel and Brown Skua. After we enjoy the splendor of Antarctica we head north to Stanley in the Falkland Islands with another shore excursion to Seal Bay and other birding locales. The Falklands are famous for their penguin colonies and we hope to see King, Gentoo, Magellanic, and maybe Southern Rockhopper. We then have our final two days at sea before we anchor in Montevideo, Uruguay, where we will have a free day to enjoy Uruguayan culture and bird the local park, before we end the cruise in Buenos Aires the following day.
