The southwestern counties of Devon and Cornwall are rugged, windswept and steeped in history. Devon, with the historic capital of Exeter, is the fourth largest county in England. With Dartmoor at its heart, Devon has rugged coasts, deep valleys and picturesque villages and towns. Some of the highlights will include Exeter Cathedral, Agatha Christie’s home at Greenway, River Dart, the wetland reserves of Slapton Ley and Dawlish Warren and of course the wild open spaces of Dartmoor (location for the Hound of the Baskervilles by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle). The county of Cornwall sticks out into the Atlantic and receives wind and gales from the west. Deep valleys hold migrant birds as they move south and even Trans-Atlantic vagrants during stormy spells. We will explore some of Cornwall’s best birding locations, as well as some of the locations for Arthurian legends, such as Tintagel and Dozmary Pool. We will look for the famous “Cornish” Choughs along the Lizard Peninsula and hope for good seabird passage along the north coast at Pendeen. This 12 day trip should give us plenty of opportunities to see and enjoy a wide variety of birds, history and landscapes of these two southwestern counties.
