Mount Pisgah Hawkwatch

Venture’s Guide Vicky Burke also conducts the annual Hawkwatch on the Blue Ridge Parkway. Located at Mile Marker 404.5, known as Mount Pisgah Hawkwatch, this location overlooks the beautiful valley of Mills River, North Carolina. This location is perfect as both sides of the Parkway provide perfect viewing areas – both to the east and to the west. From the south end of the parking lot, we can scan the sky as Raptors approach from the north.

We’re often asked …where do the hawks come from!? Our answer: everywhere north of us!

Indeed, the most sought-after Raptors are the Broad-winged Hawks as they migrate through in groups called “Kettles,” sometimes reaching as many as several thousand at a time. While not necessarily seeking company, they do take advantage of the same thermal conditions and basically, just end up in large groups!

So far this season, We have had a great start with a good handful of Bald Eagles, Osprey, Cooper’s Hawks and a couple Merlins to name a few species. We also have a nice assortment of songbirds to entertain us while waiting for the next raptor to appear. Cape May Warblers seem to be the predominant species at the moment.

September 15 was a very exciting day as some observers got to experience their first Broad-winged Hawk “kettle”, albeit being only 16 birds. By the end of the week there will be hundreds if not thousands!

Anyone can come join us on the Parkway. We’re always happy to have more eyes on the sky - and follow this blog for more Pisgah Hawkwatch updates.
